Sun Safety

Why Is the Sun So Powerful?

The sun sends out UV rays. You can’t see or feel these rays, but they can sneak into your skin and cause trouble. UV rays are strong enough to give you a sunburn Over time, too much sun can also damage your skin cells, making them weaker and increasing the chances of problems later, like wrinkles or even skin cancer when you grow up.

How Does Your Skin Protect You?

Your skin has a special trick to help out—it makes melanin. Melanin is like a tiny umbrella for your skin cells, blocking some of those UV rays. That’s why your skin gets darker when you’re out in the sun—it’s trying to protect you! But even with melanin, your skin can only handle so much sun before it needs extra help.

How Can You Keep Your Skin Happy and Healthy?

Wear sunscreen every day: Pick one that says “broad-spectrum” on the bottle. This means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Put it on 15 minutes before you go outside and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.
