As part of Tiny Tots Health Initiative's commitment to improving health literacy around the world, our Founder and CEO, Fadie Arabo, recently met with Dr. Calisha Allen while visiting London, United Kingdom. The conversation explored some of today's most pressing challenges in healthcare communication and the exciting innovations shaping the future of health literacy.

When Health Information Isn't Understood

One of the most memorable moments from our discussion centered on Dr. Allen's experience working in a care home. She shared the story of a resident who continued eating foods containing gluten despite needing to avoid it. The issue was not a lack of motivation, it was a lack of understanding.

This example highlights an important reality: health literacy is about far more than reading ability. Patients can receive instructions from healthcare professionals, yet still struggle to understand medical terminology, dietary restrictions, medication instructions, or the reasoning behind recommendations. Without clear communication, even the best medical advice may not lead to better health outcomes.

Making Hospital Discharge Instructions Easier to Understand

Another major topic of conversation focused on hospital discharge instructions. Discharge documents are often filled with medical jargon, dense paragraphs, and complex wording that can overwhelm patients and families.

Dr. Allen discussed how relatively simple modifications, such as using plain language, improving formatting, organizing information into clear sections, and highlighting key action items, can dramatically improve patient understanding. These changes can help patients better manage medications, recognize warning signs, and follow treatment plans once they return home.

Improving the readability of discharge materials represents one practical opportunity to strengthen health literacy across healthcare systems.

The Future of Health Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The conversation also looked toward the future.

Dr. Allen and Fadie discussed how emerging artificial intelligence technologies, including large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Claude, and similar tools, have the potential to transform patient education. These technologies may one day help patients translate complex medical information into language that is easier to understand, generate personalized educational materials, answer health-related questions, and support communication between patients and healthcare providers.

While these technologies must be implemented responsibly, they represent an exciting opportunity to make healthcare information more accessible for individuals of all backgrounds and literacy levels.
